The beauty of folk geometry

Perhaps the most widespread geometrical shape appearing in folk art is the symbol of a star. It takes various forms, the most common of which are six- and eight-pointed stars. We come across them on folk textiles, embroidery, painted ornaments, and woodcarvings throughout the whole of Slovakia. The star is considered a protective symbol and it is often seen on wooden gables of houses. In the past, it was the star symbol which was thought to bring happiness, health, and love into families.
